Absolute beginner #8 - Talking about hobbies

Bo and leva
Where English has only one word, to live, Swedish has two. The translation we're looking for at this point in our learning journey is bo. It's used when you talk about where someone resides.Jag bor i Sverige.I live in Sweden.
The second word, which I'm just adding as a bonus, because of its resemblance to its English counterpart, is leva – a word that does indeed mean to live but at this point, all you need to know is that it more often focuses on the act of being alive.
Morfar lever fortfarande.Grandpa is still alive.
Talking about hobbies
When we talk about hobbies in Swedish, we usually talk about intressen rather than hobbyer.Vilka är dina intressen?What are your hobbies?Mitt intresse är fotboll.My hobby is soccer.
When distinguishing something from your job, you would rather use hobby instead: Det är bara en hobby.(It's only a hobby.)
Vara and ha
We already know the verb vara and are extending our palette with the word ha – another super useful word to know! We had both words in the sentence Jag är inte gift men har ett barn.(I'm not married but have one child.)As you already know, we can use adjectives with vara, which we did in this lessons' dialogue. Here we had gift which means married.
Jag är trött.I'm tired.Jag har ont i huvudet.I've got a headache.
Conjunctions
To connect words and sentences, we use tiny powerful words called conjunctions in fancy-pants lingo talk. In this lesson, we learned two super important ones: och and men.Jag är ung och het.I'm young and hot.Jag gillar film och musik.I like movies and music. Blomman är ful men doftar gott.The flower is ugly but smells good.Det är kallt men soligt.It's cold but sunny.
Och is the only word that spells a long K sound with the combination ch instead of ck. However, this sound is only theoretical as the word is pronounce like å.
Gilla and tycka om
Instead of talking about interests and hobbies, we can talk about things we like with the verb gilla, which we learned in the dialogue of this lesson, or its synonym tycka om.Jag gillar vargar.I like wolves.Jag gillar att läsa.I like to read.
Jag tycker om vargar.I like wolves.Jag tycker om att läsa.I like to read.
Tycka om is a so-called particle verb, which means it has a main verb and a preposition or adverb as its particle. You don't need to worry about this at this point, just don't confuse this word with the stand-alone tycka and remember that you need both the verb and the particle for it to mean to like.
